About Me

The fam
I'm just a regular guy.  At the time of writing this (Feb 2014) I'm 30, have a wife, a near 2 year old daughter and another little Miss on the way.  I live in the outer Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and work full time in the city.

I've always loved sports.  I'm pretty sure as a kid I played almost every sport possible.  I was a decent enough cricketer, managing to play for both Ringwood and Croydon at representative level as a junior and winning a few batting and bowling awards along the way.  I was ok at AFL, played a bit of soccer, tennis, basketball and even tried my hand at table tennis!

As I got into my late teens and school started to get in the way, as well as the social aspect of being a teenager, I lost the passion for playing sports.  I still loved watching it, but playing was becoming too much.  Then came the late nights, the beers, the car etc...and I got lazy.  I by no means got fat, just lazy.

The last of the peaks conquered - Baw Baw
It was then probably something like 9 years, about 2009/10 before I got "unlazy".  My older brother said that, despite being a lazy bastard, I somehow still had the body of a cyclist (he was a keen cyclist/triathlete and still is).  Well, the seed had been planted.  I went and bought a bike, a Specialised TriCross, thinking I'd just potter around the looking trails.  My first ride was a 16k dawdle to Yarra Glen.  I was KNACKERED!  Nearly spewed!  But I was hooked.  Bring on the hills!  About 6 months later, I upgraded.  Went the whole hog and splurged on a Cannondale SuperSix - brilliant bike.  What started out as a hobby riding once or twice up the regular "1 in 20" in the Dandenongs, turned into a desire to seek new mountains to challenge myself on.  So Donna Buang came and went, Lake Mountain, Mt Buller, Buffalo, Hotham, Baw Baw etc...

- with no training!
Time for a new challenge!  In October of 2012 my old man ran the Melbourne Marathon.  Talk about inspiring!  I mean he's fit and runs a lot, but seriously, he's my Dad and I can't run a marathon!  Challenge accepted!  My first attempted long run was a halfie, FAIL!  I did 17k and once again, near vomit.  This was going to be a lot harder than I first imagined!  I trained for about 6 months for the 2013 Melbourne Marathon.  I was ready way too early, peaked too soon.  Got injured 4 weeks out.  ITB Syndrome, the bane of so many!  And to make matters worse, my brother ran the whole thing without a minute of training!
I vowed to regroup and do it better in 2014.  And while I'm at it, I set a goal to run 2014km in 2014.

That's me, I don't really have any particular motivation to run or ride, I just enjoy it, plain and simple.  If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't do it.

I'm not particularly fast, if I can do 5k in 25 minutes I'm generally happy.  I'm not gifted, I can't just go out and run 10km+, I need to work hard.  I don't have oodles of time to do what I love doing.  I don't take myself too seriously, but during recent months I have certainly begun paying attention to what I eat, what I drink, how I maintain my general well being.

My reasons for making this blog are:

- Keep track of what I do/eat on a regular basis
- Hopefully give others training ideas, new routes to run/ride
- Alleviate boredom
- Just generally write down some of the stuff I'm interested in, and who knows, maybe other people are interested in it too.
